The NBA and How it Handled Coronavirus

Updated: Oct 23, 2020

This March everyone was taken by surprise when the entire world shut down. Everyone was stuck inside and all activities and work places were shut down. With this came all professional and collegiate sports, even thought they were in the middle of a season.

Once this happened a special team was created to solve the problem and find a way to ensure player safety whilst letting games be played. They constructed a thorough plan on how to "restart" the league. It took some time but four months after this whole thing blew up they had the answer. They constructed a document that contained over one hundred pages that outlined all the guidelines and strategies to keep players safe.

To start they formed a literal bubble for the players, coaches, and staff. Everyone was expected to live in a Disney resort in Orlando where the games would be played. Players were to remain there and if they were to leave they had to quarantine and isolate for two weeks. No contact with family or friends was allowed you had to be in the bubble with your team, that's it. Players were supposed to wear masks everywhere they went other than being on the court or in practice. Other parts of the plan included testing everyday, extreme contact tracing such as using cameras to track who was in contact with who. Along with if anyone were to test positive they would have to be quarantined.

Whatever the NBA did, they did it right. Over the entire season that they played there was not a single reported case of Coronavirus. They obviously put some serious thought into how they were going to protect their players from the virus.

The season has come to a close after just over two full months of this "bubble" lifestyle for its players. This leaves one looming question though. The NBA was so successful this past couple of months with its restart, so what will this coming season look like for the players and their families? I'm looking forward to see what the future holds for the NBA and other sports as well. It was good to have the ability to watch sports and enjoy the game and for it to be able to take your mind off of the horrible situation we're in.
